Space Exploration

The Science of Rockets
Since the late 1950's NASA has used Atlas rockets to put probes in space and satellites around Earths' Orbit. The rocket is 58 meters high. there made up of 3 stages. First stage is Atlas, second stage is Centaur, and the third stage is payload-the satellite.

The Space Program
-History of NASA
NASA was started in 1958. It was to explore space. NASA immediately started a project to Mercury to find out if humans could survive in space. During project Gemini, NASA learned about living and working in space.
-Apollo 13
Apollo 13 was launched April 11,1970. At first it seemed that it was a smooth flight, but they lost electricity, food, and water and had to remove carbon dioxide from the ship. They landed in the Pacific Ocean near Samoa on April 17, 1970 and they lost 15kg.
-Going Back to the Moon
Since 1972 3 NASA space crafts have visited the moon. In 1990 and 1992 on its way to Jupiter the Galileo probe photographed the lunar north pole.

Exploring Space Today
People are putting robots into space. They power the robots by solar panels. So the space shuttles have videophones so the astronauts can communicate any where on the shuttle. These videophones are also linked to mission control on earth.

Using Space Science On Earth
We use cordless or chargeable tools, flammable suits, and light weight helmets are part of what we use on earth and what astronauts use in space. Plus people on earth are using space materials to make light weight athletic equipment.
