This happens because Japan is on a fault line. When the plates slide against each other it causes an earthquake.
The area where earthquakes most often occur is an area located in the Pacific Ocean called the "Ring of Fire."
The closest earthquake to Manitou happened in Denver. The level of magnitude wasn't strong enough for the citizens of Manitou to feel the earthquake up in Denver.
The earthquake I picked was off the East Coast of HONSHU,JAPAN. The magnitude of this earthquake was 5.1.

This earthquake caused a tsunami on the East Coast of Japan. The focus point of the earthquake is 9.9 miles deep into earths crust.
To keep safe in a earthquake you need to get as low as you can,get shelter like hide under a table, chair or bed.Or go to the basement and if your trapped down there you might want to have food down there already and water. All in all that is how you can protect your self if there is a earthquake.
